The Importance of Creative Writing for Young People in University

creative writing

Every one of you has had to write way too many boring, academic essays. We all love writing reports and case studies, and summaries of laboratory investigations, right? Right, it all feels the same and takes the life out of you like—ugh.

But creative writing, I thought, was just a side gig for English majors, but turns out, it is a superpower for all of us. Very few people write with any form of creativity these days since every email sounds the same (and maybe it’s just written by an AI), but getting good at telling a good story or crafting a great sentence that stands out is what makes you ultimately more employable. It’s a huge part of student media, and it’s a major tool for really figuring yourself out].

3 Benefits of Creative Writing for You

1. It is How You Figure Yourself Out:

College can be an odd, perplexing, and immensely stressful time in your life. College brings you new friends, new classes, new emotional and academic pressures, and immense anxiety about the future.

Creative writing—a private journal, a personal blog, or a short story—is your safe space for processing all the chaos that has now become your life. It’s not just a way to make art; it’s a way to process the thoughts in your head, figure out your emotions, and look after your mental health.

2. It Makes You a Better Thinker (and Person):

You cannot write a good story, or even a mediocre poem, unless you are thinking about, and possibly even being, someone else. You cannot write creatively—freely—without some sort of memory, remembrance, or response.

Creative writing is somewhat like an empathy gym for your brain. It forces you to put yourself in the position of other people. Once you cultivate this type of skill, it is invaluable, not only for yourself in your personal life, but for any future career that may involve working with people.

3. Creating an Impressive Career Skill in any Area of Interest

Let’s dispel the notion that creative individuals don’t make a living. Being a good writer is one of the most valuable skills in today’s job market. A good marketer? A storyteller. A good lawyer? A creator of an irresistible story. A good human resources director? They’ll want to write a letter or email that will sell their idea.

Creative writing teaches clarity, persuasion, and memorability. All of which matter when you’re landing jobs and moving up the ladder.

3 Ways to Start Practicing Right Now on Campus

1. Join Your Campus Student Media:

This is the best first step, so join the campus magazine, the online blog, the lit journal, etc. Campus media is always looking for new voices. This is the best, most supportive place to see your work in print and get honest feedback from fellow student writers. This is where student media lives, and it is the best way to find your people.

2. Participate in Writing Contests:

This is how you hold yourself accountable. Many of us have partially completed stories saved on our computers. A deadline and the opportunity for a prize (even if it is simply bragging rights or a small cash prize) can be just the push needed to actually draft the story. Then, “award-winning writer” looks great on your resume, no matter the contest.

3. Just Start Your Own Thing:

You don’t need anyone to say you are a writer in 2025. Start a blog on Medium. Start a Substack newsletter about your niche obsession. Start an anonymous Instagram account for your poetry. The important thing is to be creating your work and putting it out there, and even finding a small audience. You will start building a portfolio and will develop your own specific voice.

Conclusion

In this contemporary world, amid a cold war of professionalism and fast-access AI writing half of our emails, a true, real-life creative voice has never been clearer. A creative writing course is not just a course. It’s a way to grow our minds, connect with others, and acquire a skill that we can take and use far beyond a course stamped on that job resume. It’s never too late to start writing, whether it be student media, writing contests, or, most worth, a personal notebook. The most important part is to start writing — your voice, your most authentic voice, must be heard above the rest.
