When we think about pollution, the first thing that comes to our minds is soot, overflowing dustbins, contaminated water, etc. But we very easily tend to forget about something we use everyday, which is known to cause the most damage to our environment. CLOTHES. The fashion industry, according to the UN Environment Programme, is the 2nd biggest consumer of water and accounts for up to 10% of global carbon emissions.

This reality requires pressing attention as we seldom happen to ignore how the fast fashion industry can cause extreme harm to our surroundings under the impression of being trendy and sustaining through mass production. The Quantis International 2018 report mentioned that the main enablers of the fashion industry – dyeing and finishing, yarn preparation and fibre production constitute up to 36%, 28% and 15% of pollution respectively. In the light of this exploitation of resources, a new trend is in vogue which not only promises sustainability but also promotes – creativity, uniqueness and innovation.

Eco-friendly fashion trends have gained popularity in the past few years and are now not only restricted to fashion houses but are becoming an admiration among students, as there has been an increased interest in studying sustainable fashion. Eco-friendly fashion can be described as the use of sustainable materials such as organic and recycled products coupled with eco-conscious production involving – less use of water, chemicals; etc which also encourages longevity to counter fast fashion’s harmful impact on the environment.

Accordingly, this beautiful combination of sustainability and fashion has been excitedly taken up by students, who are not only showing keen interest in the field but are excelling exemplarily in their pursuits of popularising the Eco launch of fashion. Some noteworthy emerging student initiatives are as follows –

1. Green Campus Couture –

These are events at universities and design schools showcasing students repurposing materials like plastic packaging into jackets, skirts, or converting old sarees into modern clothing. Students actively experiment with natural dyes and use zero-waste techniques making runway both an artistic event and a form of advocacy.

2. Eco Couture Runway –

In India, this event provides a platform to portray sustainable fashion, handloom and khadi fabrics to support local artisans and traditional weaving methods.

3. Dona Rufina –

It is a Brazilian brand that became exceedingly famous for using raw wool as an alternative to animal skins and synthetic materials.

It is even more interesting to know how these initiatives are made a reality. There are many ways through which students have been able to advocate the importance of sustainable fashion, the following can be considered as the same –

1. Circular Design –

Adoption of buy-back programs and designing products for durability and recyclability to keep materials in use and out of landfills.

2. Bio-based Alternatives –

There is a subspecies of mushroom called Mycelium, which is used to develop vegan leather, and is now acting as a durable and planet-friendly alternative to traditional methods.

3. Recycling and Reusing Materials-

It is extensively used to create new artistic and unique clothing patterns. Recycled plastic can now be transformed into durable threads which can be used ahead to form different types of clothes.

Thus, it would be right to say that Eco launch runways are a creative and artistic way of blending technology with fashion.
