From Campus to Community: Student-Powered Digital Storytelling with Impact

Student Digital Storytelling

Topic: Student Digital Storytelling, community storytelling and digital storytelling tools

Storytelling is an art that has existed since time immemorial. Whether through pictures, through oral stories, or through words. It is just as relevant today with the inception of the digital age. In fact, in the current landscape, it is a particularly powerful artform due to its accessibility especially via digital storytelling. This allows us to leverage digital tools available to us today to share our and our ancestors’ lived experiences. This is an opportunity for us to take initiative and amplify the voices of our local communities while developing our technical and creative skills simultaneously, creating a space for making meaningful change.

Community storytelling has always, at its core, been about representation. Community digital storytelling allows just that, but in a way that maximises both reach and efficiency. In many cases, global media and institutional perspectives form the mainstream narrative causing local stories to go unheard in the sea of media. Students are formed by the youth of today – and by empowering them with the right tools, their multimedia social impact cannot be overstated.

5 Creative Tools Students Use to Transform Community Storytelling

Voice

These stories have the power to bring forth cultural traditions, social challenges, grassroots activism, and even personal journeys that otherwise are deprived of the limelight. By taking it upon oneself to familiarize themselves with the digital tools, all of the elements of daily life in local communities can be brought forth to the audience it deserves lest these stories go unheard and lose relevance in the face of corporatised content. There exist a plethora of tools that enable the same:

Video production

A camera and editing software are all one needs to get started to make a video. Cameras that are already part of all smartphones are already high quality in this day and age, eliminating the need for fancy and expensive equipment. There are also many editing softwares available to download for free on the internet, with free tutorials present on resources on YouTube. This allows for real time documentation of life in local communities in a manner that can replicate the quality of what we see on the big screen due to accessibility of information present today.

Photography

We have all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words, and that rings true today. Photography is a useful skill that we can use to amplify stories without even saying any words  out loud. Capturing the everyday lives of individuals might seem mundane but highlights its power through the art of visual storytelling. It may be through a smartphone camera or a fancy DSLR, what matters is having the right attitude and developing the right skills. Composition and editing can help a simple picture gain a lot of traction when shared on social media platforms as they are largely based on visual aesthetic, such as Instagram or blogging platforms.

Podcasts

Podcasts have been around for a long time and are still thriving as a medium of storytelling and mass communication. You may have come across YouTube and Spotify, which have hundreds of podcasts with thousands of listeners tuning in on a daily basis. Students can and should take the responsibility upon themselves to make use of such platforms to hone their own communication or oratory skills in the process. A podcast can bring unsung stories to life if done right. Whether it is an in-depth analysis of community living, a heartwarming interview with the elders of the neighbourhood, or a lighthearted comedic setup, all one needs to get started is a hint of creativity.

Empowerment

Moreover, such a venture extends the role of a student into one that transcends the classroom. As young individuals with the most tools for widespread communication as their arsenal ever in history due to the advent of the Internet, regardless of background, they all carry immense power. A power to document their ancestral heritage before it rapidly sweeps away under cultural homogenisation. This is a skill that can even open up multiple opportunities – online content creation, partnerships with NGOs, assimilation into cultural organisations, etc. Therefore, student-led digital storytelling in local communities is an untapped resource that has much to give.
