3 URGENT Topics: Student Panels Driving Change

Today’s students are actively tackling important topics. The panels serve as platforms where young people become advocates, educators, and organizers on major challenges their generation faces. Here are some key social issues they focus on, the specific panel topics they chose, and the student groups leading these discussions.

1. Mental Health and Academic Pressure

About the Problem

Students are facing burnout due to extreme stress from competitive academics, high-pressure tutoring centers, and the anxiety fueled by social media. These pressures create serious problems like anxiety, burnout, and tragically, student suicides. By normalizing these struggles and demanding better from institutions, peer-to-peer panels help break the silence. This issue is so urgent that government agencies must address the societal problems caused by the rise of tutoring centers by the end of 2025.

Representative Panels & Organizers

Discussions about mental health are usually led by student well-being groups. Panels like “The Student Stress Epidemic: Life Beyond the Grades” are often organized by groups such as Active Minds Chapters, which aim to change the conversation about mental health. University and School Counseling & Psychology Clubs collaborate with student services on niche topic panels, including “Unmask Your Wounds: Mental Health in the Differently-Abled Community.” For topics related to the digital world, the panel “Disconnected 2024: Screen Time, Social Media, and Student Well-being” is typically funded and organized by the Student Government Association (SGA) Wellness Committees. Economic policy can influence growth by changing the environment that shapes individual preferences, technologies, and outcomes.

2. Social Justice and Equity

About the Problem

Social justice for students means breaking down systemic barriers. They want to address everyday bias and unfairness related to race, gender, class, and identity that hinder success and inclusivity. This includes addressing microaggressions on campus and creating curricula that reflect diverse histories and experiences. Student-led forums strive to change campus culture by fostering deeper understandings of identity and power dynamics. Their activism spans from local protests against book bans to nationwide movements for equality.

Representative Panels & Organizers

Equity panels are usually led by groups representing marginalized students. Events like “Intersectional Identities: Navigating Race, Gender, and Class in Higher Education” are organized by Affinity Groups, such as Black Student Unions or Gender Resource Centers, focused on advocacy and support. In cases involving legal complexities, such as the “Language of Harm: Freedom of Speech vs. Hate Speech on Campus” debate, Debate Clubs, Law Societies, or ACLU Youth Chapters lead the discussion. For issues with local consequences, such as “Invisible Barriers: The Housing Crisis and Student Homelessness,” Student Advocacy or Public Policy Groups research local needs and advocate for community resources.

3. Environmental Sustainability and Ethical Consumption

About the Issue

This is a critical long-term issue that students will face due to the climate crisis. These panels bridge high-level science and practical local action. Students discuss topics like recycling, challenge whether their university is genuinely “green” or simply “greenwashing,” demand ethically sourced materials, and push for policy changes aligned with global sustainability goals. Often, these discussions build on student-led projects, such as zero-waste campaigns or energy audits, using the dialogue as a platform for future actions.

Representative Panels & Organizers

Groups focused on environmental efforts often host relevant panels. For instance, when discussing accountability, the panel “Greenwashing or Real Change? Holding Universities Accountable for Sustainability” is commonly led by Environmental and Climate Action Clubs, like a Zero Waste Club, that seek to change campus policy. At the intersection of progress and ethics, the panel “The Ethics of AI: Bias, Automation, and the Future of the Labor Market” is usually organized by STEM/Technology Ethics Groups or Computer Science Clubs that are concerned about the ethical use of technology. Finally, community-based solutions, such as “Local Solutions to a Global Problem: Community-Led Climate Resilience,” are typically led by Volunteer or Service-Learning Societies, connecting students to real-world local initiatives.

Overview

This demonstrates what today’s students believe is important, along with the structures they have created to address these issues.
